How mentorship powers innovation & leadership

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate progress while reflecting on how we actively shape the future. This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” resonates deeply with me.
I benefited from mentorship early in my career, and today I am proud to pay that forward by mentoring others. The theme reflects a leadership principle I strongly believe in: when we invest in people, we strengthen our organizations, our culture, and our long‑term impact.
One lesson has remained constant throughout my career—growth does not happen in isolation. Behind every successful leader is someone who offered perspective, challenged assumptions, and created opportunity. Mentorship is not a buzzword; it is a catalyst for growth, innovation, and sustained success.
At C&D Trojan, we operate in a highly technical, performance‑driven environment where continual advancement is essential. Building market‑leading battery solutions requires engineering, manufacturing and commercial excellence, but it also requires developing the next generation of leaders who will carry our legacy forward—just as C&D Trojan has done for more than 200 combined years.
Leadership as a Multiplier
Leadership is more about influence than it is authority . At its best, leadership multiplies capability by creating clarity, building confidence, and empowering others to take on new challenges. Mentorship is one of the most effective ways to develop this.
When leaders give their time, share experiences, and provide candid feedback, professional growth accelerates. Emerging leaders gain confidence and perspective, and organizations become stronger and more resilient as a result. In manufacturing and energy storage, industries that historically have been underrepresented by women, mentorship is especially impactful. Representation matters, but access, visibility, and advocacy often make the difference between potential and progress.
The Business Case for Mentorship
“Give to Gain” is not just a personal philosophy—it is a business strategy at C&D Trojan. Mentorship strengthens engagement, supports succession planning, and brings diverse perspectives to leadership discussions. In an industry defined by rapid technological change and increasingly complex customer demands, leadership readiness and diversity of thought are competitive advantages.
Developing talent at every level of the organization is essential to sustaining innovation. When individuals are empowered to take ownership, lead cross‑functional initiatives, and contribute strategically, performance and culture advance together.
Building Confidence Through Opportunity
Confidence is built through trust and responsibility, not titles alone. Effective mentorship creates opportunities for individuals to stretch—whether by leading high‑visibility projects, contributing in executive settings, or navigating complex decisions with guidance and support.
Transparency is equally important. Sharing lessons learned, through both successes and setbacks, reinforces that growth is iterative. When leaders model openness, it fosters psychological safety and encourages initiative and innovation.
Paying It Forward
The true impact of mentorship is cultural. When mentorship becomes embedded in an organization, it creates a cycle of support and development. Very often, those who are mentored become mentors themselves. This strengthens collaboration, retention, and long‑term leadership continuity. I am proud to continue that cycle at C&D Trojan by mentoring talented individuals across the organization and helping them build confidence, capability, and leadership skills.
Mentorship, Year‑Round
As we recognize International Women’s Day, the message is simple: mentorship and advocacy are foundational to leadership development. It should not be practiced on a single day but embraced daily.
When we give intentionally, we build stronger teams, enable greater innovation, and form a more inclusive future. At C&D Trojan, we are proud to advance not only battery technology, but leadership that empowers others to thrive.
