Vilfredo and Heloisa Schurmann, joined by their three children, have circumnavigated around the world three times on their 55-foot sailboat, Aysso. The Brazilian family's remarkable journeys have been featured in television programs and National Geographic features.
Now preparing for their next adventures, the Schurmann family once again turns to Trojan batteries to power their voyage, reinforcing their long-standing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

When we are at sea, energy is much more than comfort. It is autonomy, safety, and confidence. That’s why, on the Aysso, energy storage is done with Trojan batteries, ensuring peace of mind to face every challenge."

Since their first trip around the world in 1984, Trojan batteries have been essential for Aysso's journeys. They provide reliable energy for navigation, communication, comfort, and sustainability on the sailboat.
On the Aysso's maiden voyage, they equipped the sailboat with Trojan lead acid batteries. These marine batteries provided reliable energy for navigation, communication, comfort, and sustainability aboard the Aysso.
After they returned home to Santa Catarina, Brazil, they replaced the Trojan batteries with some from another manufacturer. Those replacement batteries did not withstand the rigors of the marine environments in which the Aysso sailed.
When it was time to replace the batteries after only four years of use, the Schurmanns went back to the brand they trusted—Trojan. Choosing Trojan batteries continues the long tradition of dependable performance that Trojan Battery has provided for 100 years.
Dependable 12V and 6V batteries for sailboats and other vessels
The Schurmanns installed Trojan flooded lead acid batteries again as part of a full refurbishment of the sailboat. Four 6V batteries and one 12V battery for boats were integral parts of the Aysso's modernized electrical system.
Vilfredo chose Trojan's J305G-AC 6V Flooded Lead Acid Battery and T-1275 12V Flooded Lead Acid Battery for the boat.

Trusted Energy for Ocean Expeditions
At sea, every mile demands trust and reliable energy. For decades, the Aysso sailboat of Vilfredo Schurmann has relied on Trojan batteries to power its ocean expeditions and onboard systems.
In this video, discover how clean energy, autonomy, and reliability help keep navigation, communication, lighting, refrigeration, and life onboard running safely through every journey.
Sustainability and environmental responsibility
In 2019, the Schurmann family launched the Voice of the Ocean initiative to fight pollution in global seas. As advocates for ocean conservation, they are committed to environmental responsibility.

More than 90% of the energy consumed daily on the Aysso comes from clean, renewable sources, such as solar and wind power. With Trojan batteries as robust backup, they achieve full autonomy for desalination, refrigeration, lighting, navigation, and satellite communication. These are essential for safety and comfort at sea.
Using Trojan batteries supports the Schurmann family’s sustainability goals. Trojan flooded lead acid batteries contain up to 80% recycled materials, and 98% of their components are fully recyclable. That approach reinforces Trojan’s shared commitment to environmental preservation.
"When we are at sea, energy is much more than comfort. It is autonomy, safety, and confidence," said Schurmann. "That’s why, on the Aysso, energy storage is done with Trojan batteries, ensuring peace of mind to face every challenge."
More about Trojan Batteries for boating and sailing
Trojan has manufactured deep cycle lead acid batteries for over 100 years. Options include flooded lead acid, lithium-ion, Trojan AES AGM, and standard AGM options.
Trojan engineers build these batteries for endurance and performance in tough conditions. Their thick plates support repeated deep discharges and recharges, ensuring consistent energy output. Quiet operation lets users focus on the water, not the power source.
They also offer reliability and convenience. They have easy-lift handles and dual terminals for easy gear connections. The large vent caps help reduce acid leakage.
Partnership and expert support
Ápice Sistemas de Energia, Trojan's distributor in Brazil, supports the Aysso initiative with its expertise. Ápice ensures broad product portfolio availability, technical support, and specialized services throughout the country.
Trojan and Ápice have worked together to meet the sailboat’s refurbishment timeline so that the Schurmann family is now ready for their next ocean voyage.
